Love and Relationships...

The Couple Enrichment ApproachTM

As life partners, and as a husband-and-wife co-therapy team, we have witnessed on a personal level, as well as on a professional level, the challenges that couples face daily. In our Couples Retreat counseling sessions, we draw upon many years of experience to create a dynamic and positive learning environment.

While many marriage therapists see their clients both individually and together, we feel that the best work is done when both partners attend each session as a couple. This way everything is out in the open, and there is a greater opportunity to learn more about each other right from the get go. If your partner is willing to join you in this process, you will both benefit from it greatly.

Our Methodology

As husband-and-wife marriage counselors and couples co-therapists, we bring a unique perspective to the art of loving. Rather than offer instant solutions, we encourage the development of skills, attitudes and emotional openness that are essential in the expression of love within an intimate relationship.

We work with both married and non-married couples of both heterosexual and same-sex orientations to resolve relationship roadblocks. We also help those who want to renew, rediscover or enrich the quality of their relationships.

Working as a husband-and-wife co-counselling team, we draw upon our own experiences as a couple, demonstrating equality and mutual respect. Traditional marriage or couple counselling usually focuses on symptoms or problems. We focus on what is healthy in each individual, rather than on what may be "wrong" or "missing". We look at what shapes the dynamic of each relationship, and how relationship dynamics change as each individual grows and faces new life challenges.

The Quest for Love

Staying in love and maintaining emotional connectedness is a real challenge for many couples. Faced with the growing demands of work and family life, romance and passion easily fade. Over time, couples find themselves seeking more intimacy and more meaningful contact. Our couples counselling and intensive Retreats are focused on creating and learning to recreate the emotional connectivity and sense of partnership that every couple needs to handle the many challenges that life will bring them.

Understanding Love and Relationships

The Couple Enrichment Approach™ views love as an art, a dynamic activity, rather than an idyllic, passive state that lasts forever. As with any art form, love can be mastered with ongoing learning and dedicated practice over a lifetime. We define the purpose of relationships as an opportunity for each partner to develop as a loving individual in the context of connecting deeply with his or her partner.

Creating Emotional Connection

Relationships can improve when we learn certain basic skills. But these skills have more meaning when we focus on connecting emotionally. To connect emotionally requires that we be more open and vulnerable. It also means that we must develop the capacity to listen deeply, and to be empathetic, even though we may be painfully aware that we feel and think differently from our partners.

Sustaining Love

Staying in love as a couple requires a clear vision of purpose, a commitment to individual growth and shared values, and practical skills to carry out that vision.

We encourage our clients to look within, to explore their own individual feelings, attitudes and values. Rather than focus on behaviour, we help them understand their emotional reactions. We encourage them to find ways to self-sooth, and to help their partners regulate their own emotions.

Will our Approach Work for You?

Whether your relationship is at a crossroads, or you are seeking more connectedness, our approach will help turn things around. You will learn to speak from your heart. You will learn to stop blaming and reacting to your partner. Your will develop the ability to "read" your partner, and begin to "hear" what he or she is saying. You will learn to recover more quickly when arguments become escalated. And you will begin to renew the intimacy you once shared, even feel it more deeply.

Change doesn't happen overnight. It takes a lifetime of practice. Our Couples Retreat will start you out on the right path. We invite you to share this lifelong journey so that you can create more peace, hope, and contentment in all areas of your life. CALL US now to find out more.
