The Couple-to-Couple Approach to Counselling

In our 35 years together, and as a husband-and-wife co-therapy team, we have witnessed on a personal as well as a professional level the challenges that couples face daily. In our counselling sessions, we draw upon many years of experience to create a dynamic and
positive learning environment. Take some time to read about our counselling services, and please feel free to call us to discuss how you can benefit from these programs.

Let's talk about our approach to counselling. While many therapists see couples both together and individually, we feel that the best work is done when you attend each session as a couple. This way everything is out in the open, and you have an opportunity to learn more about each other right from the get go. If your partner is willing to join you in the this process, you will both benefit from it greatly.

We offer a free half hour during your initial consultation. In this two-hour session, you will have an opportunity to see for yourselves how we work as husband-and-wife co-therapists. During the introductory session, you will have the opportunity to discuss your personal issues in a safe environment, while benefiting from our professional experience.

The initial couple-to-couple consultation will give each of you a forum to speak freely and be heard -- by one another as well as by us. Couples leave the session feeling more hopeful and capable of change.

After you have had a chance to meet with us in person, the two of you can decide more knowledgeably whether our approach will be right for you.

What Happens in a Couples Counselling Session?

In couple-to-couple counselling sessions, you will have an opportunity to bring your issues to the table in an atmosphere of openness and non-judgementalism.

Our focus is on each of you as an individual, and we will help you learn to relate from the best of you, so that you can love each each other deeply as two strong, independent individuals. We will explore the dynamics of your relationship, and help you to become less reactive, and more responsive to each other, without losing your "selves" in the process. We will work with you on becoming more
emotionally separate, i.e. less caught up in what your partner is feeling. You will learn to maintain a balance between remaining separate and staying connected. (Pre-order your copy of our soon-to-published e-Book,  The Paradox of Love: How to Stay Separate and Still Be Connected)

What areas do we most commonly address?

  • the feeling of drifting apart or being disconnected
  • the desire for more meaningful communication
  • a lack of passion and sexual intimacy
  • issues of trust (e.g. extramarital affairs)
  • persistent arguments and power struggles

We help couples of all ages face the challenges associated with:

  • the decision to get married
  • raising children, from tots to teens
  • the demands of a double income family
  • empty nesting
  • post-retirement lifestyle change

Separation or Reconciliation Counselling

If you are in the throws of divorce or separation, we would concentrate on helping you individually to adjust to the new realities that you are now facing.

On the other hand, if you are about to separate, or have already separated, but you are considering reconciliation, and would like to find a way to stay together, our
Couples Retreat will help you begin the healing process. You will learn how to begin life together anew from a healthier, calmer, and more knowledgeable perspective.

If couple-to-couple counselling sessions should result in a decision to separate or divorce, we will work with you to help you with the challenging process of moving forward -- with kindness and mutual respect. If you have children, you will want to be able to convey to them the love and security that they still need.

Biweekly Sessions or Three-Day Couples Intensive Retreat

Couples who seek our counselling services are often at various stages of disconnect in their relationships. Some are in the midst of having more difficulty than others. One or both partners may be holding on to just the slightest hope that counselling can turn things around.

Even couples who feel more compatible, and who know that they love each other, may feel that something is missing in their relationship. Perhaps work and family challenges or personal life choices have kept them from expressing their love fully.

Whatever brings you to couples or marriage counselling, you will be glad you made the decision to get your relationship back on track.

We offer couples counselling sessions in two formats:

  • a couples counselling session (beginning with a two-hour Consult in our Hockley Valley home office, and continued every two to three weeks when a Retreat cannot be immediately arranged)
  • a three-day couple intensive retreat (three half-day sessions), followed by shorter sessions at two, three and six-month intervals (in person or by phone)

For more details see Deepening the Connection.

Biweekly Sessions

Couples counselling sessions are usually two hours in length. The period between sessions will give you the time needed to process what you have learned and integrate what you have experienced during each session.
Your first in-person consultation (at our Hockley Valley location) will include a complimentary half hour.

Couple Intensive Retreat

For couples who feel "stuck" and want to kick start the couples counselling process, for those with busy work schedules, or elder-parent or child care responsibilities, and for those who would like to experience a weekend of renewal and personal growth, the
Couple Intensive Retreat (Hockley Valley office only) is an excellent way to move your relationship forward. This Intensive Retreat experience will help you work through areas of disconnect and enrich an already emotionally-committed relationship. the Retreat includes a telephone follow-up a few eeks after your three-day visit. You can find more information about our Couple Retreats on the Retreats page of this site.

Follow-Up Sessions: "Deepening the Connection"

After the Retreat, we meet (or speak by telephone) periodically in pre-planned follow-up sessions to deepen your connection over a two-year period. We recommend these follow-up sessions to give you renewed energy and a deeper understanding about yourself and your partner.

Our goal is to help you know how to meet any challenges that may come your way. (And life will certainly find a way of presenting them to you!)
