Banff Couples Conference Facilitators
Louise Dorfman and David Rubinstein were the co-facilitated the annual Banff Couples Conference in February 2015, held at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Alberta.
We were honoured and delighted to be chosen as the sole facilitators for this 3-day event. That year, 70 couples were in attendance. Their enthusiasm for learning new skills to enrich their relationships was contagious.
We chose as our theme for the Conference: Knowing Your Partner: The Road to a Secure Functioning Relationship.

Drawing upon our experiences – as psychotherapists, working partners, and parents –- we have acquired a rich source of theoretical and practical knowledge that enhances our work in the area of couple therapy and couple enrichment.
As marriage co-therapists, we focused our work for many years on helping couples express their individuality, while being caring, respectful, and responsive to each other’s needs. We have integrated into our work the understanding that couples need each other to grow, and are therefore interdependent. Our Couple Enrichment Approach™ combines the concept of “love as an art”, with the understanding of early attachment patterns and brain science. Our goal is to help couples develop safe and securely functioning relationships that they can maintain and sustain over a lifetime together (for more on “securely-functioning relationships”, go to Stan Tatkin, PACT).
When we know why our partners do what they do and say what they say …
When we feel greater empathy and more tolerance for each other’s differences …
When we collaborate and express our mutuality …
When we can count on each other 24/7…
Then… We are on the road to creating a safe and secure-functioning long-term relationship.
What did participants learn at the Conference?
Couples who attended the 2015 Banff Couples Conference engaged in one-on-one exercises to:

- Identify their attachment and communication styles
- Read and regulate each other’s emotional states
- Understand how their brains impact their interactions as a couple
- Repair moments of hurt, injury, and disconnect
